Kemba Nelson, an Alternate Person (AP) Reserve for Jamaica’s 4x100m relay team heading to the Paris Olympic Games, showcased her athletic prowess at a World Continental Challenge meet on Sunday.
Nelson, who finished fifth in the 100m at the JAAA/PUMA Senior and Junior National Championships, equaled her season’s best by securing third place in the same event with a time of 11.04 seconds. The race was won by Switzerland’s Mujinga Kambundji, who set a meet record 10.90 seconds, followed by her compatriot Salome Kora, who posted a personal best of 10.95 seconds for second place.
Fellow Jamaican Imani Oliver also delivered a strong performance, finishing third in the women’s triple jump with a distance of 13.75m. Senegal’s Saly Sarr won the event with a leap of 14.10m.
Several remarkable performances
The meet featured several remarkable performances. Dutch athlete Femke Bol dazzled in the women’s 400m hurdles, becoming the second woman to break the 51-second barrier in the event. Bol set a new European record with a time of 50.95 seconds, surpassing her previous best of 51.45 seconds. Kemi Adekoya of Bahrain finished second in 53.41 seconds. Bol’s time is now the third fastest in history, with only American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone recording faster times of 50.65 and 50.68 seconds.
In the women’s 100m hurdles, Nadine Visser of the Netherlands clocked an impressive 12.36 seconds, tying for the sixth-fastest time of the season. Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska was a close second in 12.37 seconds.
The men’s 100m saw South Africa’s Benjamin Richardson achieve a personal best of 9.86 seconds to win the race. Ronnie Baker of the United States followed in 9.95 seconds, with Camara Ebrahims of Gambia securing third place with a time of 9.98 seconds.
