T&T, St Lucia win in latest matches

Trinidad & Tobago and St Lucia were the only two Caribbean Football Union (CFU) teams that came away with wins in the latest matches of the Concacaf Nations League on Friday.

Ryan Telfer scored a goal and had an assist to spearhead a 3-0 win for the Soca Warriors against hosts and CFU rival the Bahamas in Group C of League B, and St Lucia continued their unbeaten run in Group C of League C with a hard-fought 2-1 win against Anguilla.

But they were heavy defeats for the CFU pair of Grenada and St Vincent & the Grenadines at the hands of the United States and Nicaragua respectively, knocking them out of contention.

T&T grabbed the lead at the Thomas Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas, in the fifth minute when a blocked shot fell at the feet of Kareem Moses and his long-range, right-footed strike flew into the top left corner of the net.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 26th minute when Telfer charged down the right flank and sent across into the center of the penalty box and Joevin Jones had easy work to finish into the net.

Telfer put the contest beyond the Bahamians eight minutes later when he gathered a pass from Alvin Jones and sent a composed finish past the home team’s goalkeeper Ian Lowe.

The result gave T&T 12 points from five matches and sets up a winner-take-all contest against Nicaragua on the final matchday on Monday on home soil, with the winner earning promotion to League A and a berth in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Andrus Remy got things rolling for St Lucia in the 17th minute at the Raymond Guishard Stadium in The Valley, Anguilla, when Gregson President led off a nice team effort from the visitors.

President passed the ball cleverly towards Jevick MacFarlane, who then sent in a cross that found the head inside the six-yard box for the striker to comfortably finish the job and grab his second goal of the tournament, with his first also coming against Anguilla last summer.

The St Lucians extended their lead in first-half stoppage time from a corner kick, with President lunging to knock in a ball that snuck past all defenders toward the back post.

The Anguillans cut the deficit in the 76th minute when Jalen Smeins set up fellow substitute Lamar Carpenter at the top of the 18-yard box for a blast that deflected into the bottom left corner of the net. This set up a dramatic final 15 minutes with the hosts hunting for an equalizer that they were never able to achieve.

St Lucia has now won three in a row and play one more match against Dominica on Monday at the Daren Sammy Stadium in Gros Islet before they head to the Gold Cup preliminary competition later this summer.

Hosts Grenada fell behind early against the United States at the Kirani James Stadium in St George’s, and they were outclassed in the remainder of the match, though a wide-open Myles Hippolyte guided a left-footed laser into net from a Jacob Bthe erkeley Agyepong cross in the 32nd minute to ensure they did not leave empty-handed.

The trio of Christian Pulisic, Ricardo Pepi, and Weston McKennie teamed up to help power the Americans to victory.
