Fred Kerley, a celebrated U.S. sprinter and Olympic medalist, was arrested in Miami Beach late Thursday night on charges including battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer without violence, and disorderly conduct, according to police.
The 29-year-old athlete was booked into jail early Friday following an incident that unfolded in the 100 block of 9th Street. Miami Beach Police officials said Kerley approached the scene while officers were investigating an unrelated matter, raising concerns about his nearby parked vehicle.
Authorities reported that Kerley’s demeanor escalated, becoming “increasingly aggressive.” Despite being asked to leave the area, he allegedly refused, prompting further confrontation. Police claim that Kerley took a “fighting stance” and ignored their commands, leading them to deploy a stun gun to subdue and take him into custody.
Kerley is expected to appear in bond court Friday afternoon. No attorney information was immediately available.
The Texas native has an illustrious track and field career, highlighted by a bronze medal in the 100m at the 2024 Paris Olympics and a silver medal in the same event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In addition to his Olympic achievements, Kerley boasts six World Championship medals, including a 100m gold at the 2022 event, and numerous titles in Diamond League competitions.
Most recently, Fred Kerley made headlines in September 2024 when he announced his participation in the inaugural season of Grand Slam Track, a new competition founded by Olympic legend Michael Johnson.
The arrest marks an unexpected turn in the career of one of track and field’s most accomplished stars. Further details regarding the incident and Kerley’s legal proceedings are expected to emerge in the coming days.
