West Indies Women’s captain calls for board-player collaboration to boost performance

West Indies Women’s captain, Hayley Matthews, has emphasized the need for collaboration between the board and players to drive improvement in the team’s performance.

Her remarks come in the wake of West Indies Women’s 2-0 defeat to Australia Women in the One-Day International series, following a 2-1 loss in the preceding Twenty20 International series.

Matthews believes that enhancing player performance will require players to work harder individually, conduct thorough research on their own games, and study the opposition. She also stressed the importance of having better structural support for women’s cricket in the Caribbean to facilitate improved match practice. Matthews commended tournaments like the WCPL for their role in player development.

West Indies Women A will embark on tour of Pakistan

During the recent series, West Indies Women fielded a young team, with several teenagers featuring prominently. In a move to further nurture their development, a West Indies Women A side will embark on a tour of Pakistan, featuring three ODIs and four T20s, starting next week. Matthews views this tour as a valuable learning experience for the younger members of the squad and an opportunity to gain confidence.

Despite missing the opening ODI due to a leg injury, Matthews had an outstanding performance in the T20 International series, earning the Player-of-the-Series honor. She acknowledged the need to manage her injury carefully as she prepares for the Women’s Big Bash League.

Matthews is set to represent the Melbourne Renegades in the tournament, which runs from October 19 to December 2. She expressed her commitment to representing West Indies and her readiness to give her best in the upcoming league.
