GC FOSTER COLLEGE, JAMAICA – The late Hubert Lawrence, a pillar of Jamaican track and field journalism and an unwavering supporter of the Western Relays, will be posthumously honored at the 46th staging of the meet on Saturday, February 8, at GC Foster College.
The announcement, made by Ray Harvey, chairman of the organizing committee and co-founder of the event, reflects Lawrence’s profound legacy and his unparalleled contributions to the growth of the celebrated relay carnival.
For over 35 years, Lawrence was a constant presence at the Western Relays, attending the event through its various transitions—from Cornwall College to the incomplete Catherine Hall Stadium in Montego Bay, and later to GC Foster College in 2009 and 2010 when the meet required an all-weather track. Even when the relays returned west, Lawrence continued his commitment, covering every staging with meticulous attention.
“Hubert’s dedication to this event was unmatched,” said Harvey. “His insights and contributions were instrumental in shaping the Western Relays into the world-class event it is today.”
A legacy etched in words
As a prolific writer, Lawrence chronicled the athletes, their achievements, and the meet’s significance in nurturing Jamaica’s track and field talent. His writings in the event magazine offered thoughtful analysis and explored wide-ranging topics. His final article, titled A Glimmer of Hope, poignantly highlighted the importance of the Catherine Hall Stadium as a central hub for track and field in the western region.
An excerpt from the article reads: “The Relays and Western Champs are glorious events when held at the Hall, filled with color and school pride. That venue gave Western track and field a center easily reached by those from northern parishes and southern parishes. Its return cannot come too soon.”
Beyond his written work, Lawrence served as a meet announcer, analyst, and invaluable advisor. His suggestions over the years helped elevate the Western Relays to international acclaim, cementing its reputation as a breeding ground for athletes who have gone on to represent Jamaica on global stages.
“His value went far beyond his visible roles,” Harvey emphasized. “Hubert was the heart of this meet, and his absence will be deeply felt. Yet, his legacy will inspire us to continue his work.”
Exciting features in the 46th staging
This year’s Western Relays will include an expanded event schedule, building on the foundation Lawrence so ardently supported. The line-up will feature:
Throws Events: Discus and shot put for all high school classes, introduced in 2024.
Invitational 60M Sprint: Returning due to high demand from senior-level coaches.
Relay Races: For prep, primary, high schools, clubs, and institutions.
Track Events: 100m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, and 3000m.
Field Events: Long jump, triple jump, and high jump.
The day will commence at 10:00 am with the 400m hurdles.
Harvey emphasized the organizers’ commitment to ensuring the 46th staging is a fitting tribute to Lawrence’s legacy, adding, “This year’s event will reflect everything Hubert loved about athletics—competition, camaraderie, and excellence.”
