The Dominican Republic is solidifying its position as a premier cruise destination with the development of a brand-new cruise port in Barahona, located on the country’s scenic southwest coast.
This ambitious project aims to diversify the nation’s tourism industry, spread economic benefits more evenly, and showcase the untouched natural beauty of the “Pearl of the South.”
The cruise sector in the Dominican Republic has experienced an unprecedented surge, with passenger arrivals soaring from 1.5 million in 2023 to over 2.6 million in 2024. More than 80% of these arrivals have been concentrated at Puerto Plata, the country’s largest cruise port. To further capitalize on this booming industry, the Ministry of Tourism has broken ground on the new Barahona Cruise Terminal, with an expected completion date in 2026.
The Barahona Cruise Terminal will offer a range of modern amenities and unique experiences for visitors, including:
-
A cutting-edge cruise ship dock capable of handling large vessels

35 commercial spaces featuring restaurants, bars, and retail outlets
-
An immersive rum-making experience showcasing the country’s renowned spirits
-
Easy access to Barahona’s pristine beaches, coffee farms, and biodiverse national parks
Barahona’s emphasis on ecotourism will set it apart from other cruise destinations like Puerto Plata and Punta Cana, offering travelers a chance to explore world-class coffee farms and stunning natural landscapes.
Expanding the Dominican Republic’s cruise options
The Barahona port is part of a broader strategy to expand cruise tourism in the country. The Cabo Rojo cruise terminal, which welcomed its first ships in 2024, has already seen growing interest from major cruise lines. Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Holland America Line are increasing their calls to Cabo Rojo for the 2025-2026 seasons, with Costa Cruises, MSC Cruises, and Holland America also joining the list. Cabo Rojo is expected to receive over 100,000 cruise passengers by 2025.
Additionally, the Arroyo Barril Port in Samaná is set to undergo a major transformation, transitioning from a port that only accommodates tenders to a modernized facility capable of welcoming large cruise ships.
With new ports at Barahona and Cabo Rojo, as well as infrastructure upgrades to existing facilities, the Dominican Republic is well on its way to becoming a top-tier Caribbean cruise destination. These developments will not only attract more cruise lines but also boost local economies and introduce travelers to some of the most breathtaking and unspoiled destinations in the region. By investing in sustainable and diverse tourism options, the country is ensuring long-term growth and prosperity in the cruise sector.
